My background in one image:

Novell on AWS

I started my IT journey way back, like the Novell days, way way waaaaay..... back. I worked in IT ops for years deploying and supporting Novell NetWare, I felt future proof, at the cutting edge, investing every brain cycle I had in Novell would guarantee me longevity and I would drive off into the sunset knowing I had accomplished IT mastery.

Err not so fast.

Back to the drawing board again 🤦🏻‍♂️

10 years later, I'd made it, I was back at the holy grail of IT - I had my MCSE and I just felt like a data centre god. All my servers squeezed into my comms room / data centre, all the flashing lights, my domain, my world. It was good to be back where I belonged, the master of my destiny! What a comeback!

Oh ffs 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

What now?? Here I go again, disrupted & uncomfortable 🤢. Virtualization hit me like a brick, I didn't even see it coming, I mean - I had experienced a bit of the desktop version, but holy cow, it didn't take long to make into my data centre!!

There was a pattern emerging here. Back to the drawing board again 🤦🏻‍♂️ this time with ESX CD's in my hand.

A few years later, I had climbed the mountain and mastered virtualisation in my data centre, I was king of the mountain again, invested lots of time in my certification and passed my 'VCP' - over the moon. This is it, I am definitely going to ride off into the sunset as a VPC!!

4 years ago I got started on AWS, I am now AWS Pro certified and have finally gotten comfortable being 'uncomfortable'. I have about 7 years left in my IT career.

Anyone know what's next?
